Working with Motivations


Let us consider 3 models that assist us to identify and work with the motivations of our volunteers. It is essential to recognise that effective volunteer programs are reciprocal in addressing both the organisation's needs and the needs of the volunteer.

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Humans are a wanting creature. Identifying and responding to individual needs will motivate.

Herzberg's 2 Factor Theory

Hygiene factors eliminate dissatisfaction but do not necessarily provide job satisfaction. Motivating factors create job satisfaction.

McClelland's Motivational Model

People have a variety of motivational drivers. Generally one is dominant in each area of their life.  Identifying and responding to these drives will motivate.
