| Volunteering To Improve the Lives of Others Mick Kiddey, a volunteer with Crossroads understands how satisfying making a difference to people’s lives can be. Crossroads provides leisure and respite care services specifically tailored to meet the needs of people with disabilities. Crossroads has an extensive network of local volunteers many of whom are directly connected with local Uniting Church organisations. Mr Kiddey, a volunteer support worker, says that he first became involved with Crossroads because he was motivated by a desire to 'do something'. As a volunteer, Mr Kiddey assists the clients of Crossroads to access and actively participate in the community. This includes assisting members to volunteer with Meals on Wheels and volunteering on social weekend activities which involves going out socially with a small group of clients. An Organic Farm Hand by day, and a back ground in labouring has also meant that Mr Kiddey can use his skills and knowledge from his background to assist the centre in building a community garden that will eventually be used as a gardening education venue. Mr Kiddey says a major highlight for him as a volunteer with Crossroads is getting involved in the community. “I believe that I am making a difference in the worlds of those who have disabilities. I enjoy sharing my positive experiences with the clients I support.” Volunteering
has been world changing for Mr Kiddey because as a result,
he is now studying to receive his Certificate IV in Disability. To find out more about Crossroads please visit www.xrdsqld.org.au |
