| Changing the World Through Volunteering
For Jean Withers, a regional coordinator for Parkinson's Queensland Inc., volunteering makes her feel like she is doing her bit for the community. “After finding out that a close friend of mine was suffering from Parkinson's I wanted to find out more information. I saw an opportunity to help with publicity and raise awareness – I saw volunteering as a chance to help change the world and people’s knowledge and perceptions of Parkinson's disease.” Ms Withers says that she has been coming in once a week for over a year to help out with such duties as general office work and says that there have been many highlights over the past year. “I have helped to organise seminars and I also think that my general knowledge on Parkinson's has improved and so has my understanding the services which are available.” Ms Withers also adds that she feels that volunteering has changed her world because the work she does can benefit the sufferers of Parkinson's. “There are always lot's of changes going on in Parkinson's - I like to think that I add a lot of support to the organisation and community.” To find out more about volunteering, please phone Volunteering Queensland on 3002 7600, or visit the website on www.volqld.org.au.
