By Monica Wilcox, Volunteer Writer, Volunteering Queensland July 2001 February 2001, Jolene's final year field practical lead her to Amnesty International and her first volunteering experience. "I can't believe I've waited so long. I should've started earlier," she enthused. A student in Politics in Government, Jolene, does research for media briefs, radio interviews and internal reports. She's also active on the Women's Network "Women & Torture" campaign, which has included several public awareness events. The Mother's Day Picnic in the Botanical Gardens for Amnesty International and the Refugee Claimant Support Centre members received good media response. The event was practical experience for Jolene in media dealings and the hard work involved in achieving media responsiveness. Personally, Jolene enjoys working with people who have the same concerns on human rights issues. Benefits are the boost to her self esteem and the potential it has brought out in her. Jolene hadn't expected volunteering to be such a rewarding experience for her. Pre-conceived ideas didn't include being surrounded by such brilliant people. Her voluntary work has taught her much from her studies perspective. Jolene is unsure of her future employment directions citing media/PR and immigration interests. Working at Amnesty International is her 'ultimate job.' Future volunteering naturally includes Amnesty International and/or other Human Rights organizations. A weekly day at the office or as a member writing Urgent Action letters on overseas campaigns are options. On volunteering itself "There are so many opportunities for an individual." |
