Homeless Connect

Make a difference…
Make the Connection
Next Homeless Connect May 11, 2010
Volunteers who assisted at the past seven Homeless Connect events found it a rewarding experience, having helped over 3700 people to connect with services that would otherwise be out of reach both financially and geographically. At the last event in November 2009 there were 655 hot meals, 170 haircuts, 50 GP visits, 50 Dentist checkups and 35 immunisations given. These services are what many of us simply take for granted but can make a huge difference in improving the lives of those living on the streets or without secure, safe housing.
The success of Homeless Connect can be attributed to the volunteers and organisations that gave generously of their time, goods and services. The volunteer team was made up of meet and greeters, donation room organisers, cloak room attendants, communication operators, information desk attendants and many other roles. Professionals who volunteered included General Practitioners, Nurses, Dentists, Hairdressers, Bus Drivers, Entertainers, Massage Therapists, Reflexologists as well as numerous other service providers.

Quotes from Homeless Connect volunteers.
“We never know just how much we can change the outcome of someone’s day by being kind and friendly”
“I was asked by a homeless man if I got paid to help them. I said no…he was amazed that we gave up our time freely to help him and others. I told him that my reward was his smile. He then smiled even more brightly!”
“I really enjoyed the day and I hope I was able to give them hope.”
"What a rewarding experience! As well as knowing you were making a difference to people's lives, even if just for a few hours, meeting the other volunteers was a reward in itself."
