TURN YOUR ORGANISATION INTO A VOLUNTEER MAGNET The second edition of the highly successful volunteer management guide was launched in December 2007.

The magnet project is unique in that it harnesses the experience of everyday volunteer managers from around the world and asks them to describe, in just 500 words, those things which make their volunteer projects ‘magnetic’.

Editors Fraser Dyer, Andy Fryar and Rob Jackson explain “the philosophy behind the project is that managers at a grass roots level have lots of experience to share, but seldom an outlet to distribute that knowledge. The magnet project allows an avenue through which they can contribute their ideas, and these are then shared freely, via the internet with their peers around the world. It is a great model of both networking and information exchange”.

The new and updated edition contains 50 chapters from 40 authors across North America, the United Kingdom, Europe and the Australasian region.

The free electronic version can be downloaded from www.ozvpm.com. A print version can also be purchased through www.lulu.com or through the OzVPM Bookstore (www.ozvpmbookstore.com) after Christmas

For more information contact Fraser Dyer (UK) at fraser@myworkinglife.org.uk or Andy Fryar (Australia) at andy@ozvpm.com

AUSTRALIAN JOURNAL ON VOLUNTEERING

The Australian Journal on Volunteering is published twice yearly for Volunteering Australia (Inc). It is now in its sixth year of publication having recently undergone a relocation and some changes. It publishes both refereed and non-refereed papers to ensure it meets the broader needs of the volunteering community.

Its purpose is to:

  • Stimulate academic debate and research on volunteering
  • Provide a forum for promoting awareness and discussion of volunteering within the volunteering community in Australia
  • Provide useful information to the volunteering community in Australia
  • Promote awareness of the voluntary sector and its attendant issues in the broader community, including government and business.

Because of these various purposes, the Journal seeks to publish a wider variety of submissions that a more traditional academic journal might do. These fall into two categories: academic submissions and non academic submissions.

GUIDELINES FOR PUBLIC SECTOR AGENCIES WORKING WITH VOLUNTEERS

Second Edition April 2003
By the Department of the Premier and Cabinet

The Western Australian Government and public sector employers recognize that the many partnerships developed between government agencies and their volunteers are vital to providing a diverse range of important services to the community.

These guidelines reflect well-founded practices associated with the good management of these partnerships. They have been prepared as a reference tool for public sector chief executives and managers. They cover a range of issues that warrant consideration when determining how to effectively manage the relationship between agencies and volunteers and they highlight the mutual obligations inherent to this partnership. These guidelines are designed to help agency staff develop agency-specific policies for managing volunteer services.

Australia –China joint research on community development
Community Development and community employment research report

By the Department of Family and Community Services

Community development in Australia is still relatively new idea, as it is in China. In undertaking this research, FaCS has had the opportunity to examine more closely its own approaches to community development, and has learnt a great deal about the process of community development in China.

This report is the product of almost 12 months of in-depth research between the Australian Department of Family and Community Services and the Chinese National Development and Reform Commission, and is a significant achievement in respect to cooperation between both Governments. Moreover, this research report is unique in that it is the first time that comparative research between Australia and China has been carried out in the area of community development.

CHANGING ROLES OF COMMUNITY SECTOR PEAK BODIES IN A NEO-LIBERAL POLICY ENVIRONMENT IN AUSTRALIA

AN ARC FUNDED STUDY (2000-2002)

FINAL REPORT
SEPTEMBER 2003

This three-year study was funded by an Australian Research Council Discovery Grant (2000-2003). The current project (2002-2002) is the culmination of a six-year study of community sector peak bodies in Australia.

The study has produced valuable baseline data on unique set of community-sector organisations. The study adds to a growing body of research on third sector organisations in Australia, which contribute an estimated 9 billion dollars to the Australian economy, as well as providing a multitude of social and political benefits. The funding of the study has signaled that these kinds of organisations are worthy of on-going academic research and industry collaboration.

WORKING WITH VOLUNTEERS AND MANAGING VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS IN HEALTH CARE SETTINGS

By Volunteering Australia and the National Health and Medical Research Council

Both the NHMRC and Volunteering Australia recognize that volunteers play an integral part in our health care system. Often resources available to managers of volunteers to assist them with recruitment, training and supervision are limited. The manual aims to provide a practical point of reference to assist in all steps of volunteer management from recruiting volunteers through to the management process once a program has become operational

VOLUNTEER IMMUNITY AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT

By Professor Myles McGregor-Lowndes and Scott Edwards

Local Government Law Journal Volume 10 November 2004 Part 2

Every jurisdiction in Australia has now enacted legislation to protect volunteers of local government from incurring personal civil liability. Local government will be affected by these laws, most jurisdictions transferring liabilities incurred by a volunteer to it. This article examines the background to these reforms before undertaking a detailed examination of how the legislation in each jurisdiction addresses the issue of volunteer protection as it applies to local governments and their volunteers. The article concludes by proposing some areas in which reform would benefit local government’s ability to deal with the liabilities imposed by the legislation.

The Quest for Eve (2007) by Leonie Bryen This thought provoking parable will take you less than an hour to read, but will serve as a wake up call to the changing face of modern volunteers & volunteering. Highlighting the emerging trend of episodic or short term volunteering, it points to the increasing likelihood of volunteers to shop around for suitable opportunities. With Australia experiencing a surge in volunteering numbers, it’s essential that CEO’s, volunteer managers and the boards of nonprofit organisations come to terms with these changes to ensure a robust and vibrant volunteering future for Australia.

COMMUNITY ASSOCIATIONS ORGANISATION GUIDE

By John Blake Consultant to Community Organisations and Events

John Blake has forty years experience of working in and with a range of Community Associations. He knows that each one is different in that each Community Association reflects the individual personalities of the people who comprise the Community Association - whether it be a church, a sports club, a service organisation or a peak body like Volunteering Queensland.

This Guide is published to:

  • share his experiences;
  • help Community Associations understand their powers and responsibilities as businesses and to be more confident in the development of each business;
  • save Community Associations the time and effort of having to invent and develop much of this material for themselves; and
  • make Community Associations better businesses.

The Guide has particular references for Community Associations in Queensland. The Guide is not a text book – just a guide – so that people of responsibility in Community Associations whether you be a Director, a Manager or a volunteer will be aware of matters which are important to help you appreciate that operating a better business is not as awesome as it may seem at first.

Cost: $50 (including GST)
