May 2008 Homeless Connect

Make a difference…Make the Connection

Volunteers who assisted at the past three Homeless Connect events (November 2006, June 2007 and November 2007) found it a rewarding experience and are looking forward to participating again on Wednesday 28 May 2008.  Are you one of them? Do you want to join the Homeless Connect team and make a difference?

The past three events have helped over 1200 disadvantaged and under privileged people to connect with services that would otherwise be out of reach both financially and geographically. These services are what many of us simply take for granted but can make a huge difference in improving the lives of those living on the streets or without secure, safe housing.

The success of the events can be attributed to the volunteers and organisations that gave generously of their time, goods and services.  To build on the success of previous events we are especially looking for volunteers who can contribute specific expertise or skills to the day:

  • General Practitioners
  • Nurses
  • Dentists
  • Optometrists
  • Podiatrists
  • Specialist Assistants*
  • Ophthalmologists
  • Hairdressers
  • Bus Drivers
  • Entertainers
  • Massage Therapists
  • Child Care Professionals
  • Acupuncturists
  • Acupressurists
  • Reiki Practitioners
  • Reflexologists
  • Natural Therapies
*Counselors / people with experience in mental health etc: are responsible for assisting participants who, because of their behaviour, require special attention. You will be assigned to this participant for the duration of their involvement in the event, including assisting in the exit process.

What volunteers from the last 3 Homeless Connect events have said:

“We never know just how much we can change the outcome of someone’s day by being kind and friendly”

“I was asked by a homeless man if I got paid to help them. I said no…he was amazed that we gave up our time freely to help him and others. I told him that my reward was his smile. He then smiled even more brightly!”

“I really enjoyed the day and I hope I was able to give them hope.”
